I think I get the point…
Better Than TV is a complicated little entity. I think it does an amazing job at creating an environment for artists to shine. As we continue our operations a lot of questions loom large… but some things remain quite clear.
When I started Better Than TV, with the help of my oh-so-faithful friends the idea was pretty simple: Create opportunities for musicians and artists to perform in an environment that is about the art and not about selling booze or coffee…
People who attend our shows and artists who strut their stuff regulary report that we do a good job of this.
It's pretty clear that the community wants to support it's local art scene. Live, local music deffinitely has a place in Calgary.
The complicated thing is what to do about money. The sometimes abundance and sometimes utter lack of it…
It seems that money complicates everything.
I am currently working with a wide variety of professionals to decide how to resolve the tension of profit vs. non profit entities and all of the related tax implications.
This of course does not imply that we make money! Ha. In fact, if I did profit sharing the artists would pay ME to play
But as we grow, it may become profitable and hopefully the steps we are taking now will help us to know what to do with the loot should we make it.
Through this time of reflection and planning I am reminded again and again that the point is creating opportunity. What BTTV does is WORTH doing in and of itself – quite apart from money. Every show I am completely amazed at how talented the people that have performed are.
In fact, at the last show I spent a lot of time just standing there… smiling. My heart knew that it was a good thing that BTTV was doing -despite a sort of small turn out. (Maybe I can't take on Virgin fest, yet!)
Cheers,
Steve
